BEYOND THE HILLS

Alina (Flutur) arrives at a remote Romanian monastery to visit her friend Voichita (Stratan), one of the nuns in training. Alina wants Voichita to leave her cloistered life and return with her to Germany, but Voichita does not want to go, so Alina decides to stay, and becomes increasingly unstable. To the pious monastery residents, Alina appears possessed by a demon and so they take the only course they believe valid. Flutur and Stratan were awarded a rare dual award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival for their performances in this stark and emotionally complex examination of a community trapped between the present and a medieval past.
