Music She Wrote
Join us for our third and final concert of our 2018/2019 Season, performing contemporary compositions by Laura Sgroi and Rebekah Cummings, a Canadian premiere by Bekah Simms and Beethovens String Quartet in C Minor, No. 4 Op. 18.
This concert, entitled Music She Wrote, features three distinctive works by the next generation of Canadian female composers alongside Beethovens early masterpiece of the classical canon. This concert is dedicated to the memory of Rebekah Cummings.
Three Canadian works comprise the focal point of the program, with each work showcasing the diverse musical languages and creative processes in our current Canadian music scene. Sgrois String Quartet No. 2 demonstrates her affinity for pop, electronic and DJ culture; Simms Swallow/Breathe deconstructs the Canadian folk song Shes Like the Swallow, creating an expansive sound world with imitations of birdsong; and Rebekah Cummings work infuses her autobiographically-inspired piece, Chasing Beauty with complex, shifting rhythmic patterns and a tonal palette inspired by traditional Balkan music.
