Yuhas & Dancers, contemporary dance collective from Columbia, SC, presents Physical Poetry, a collaboration with Charlestons esteemed Poet Laureate, Marcus Amaker. "Physical Poetry" is a movement narrative that reveals our position of response in the face of adversity. Latching onto Amakers words we illustrate the yearning for a safe space where we are free to live out our multiplicity of labels: black / gay / female to name a few. The 45-minute long work performed by the all-female troupe of all shapes, sizes, and colors travels through three sections: Under My Skin; Our Love Affair with Conflict; Remnants. Reflecting the tension of our country, the work reveals elements of our stuckness, pleading for space to breathe in a world where Donald Trump is president and hate crimes have become daily news. Through tension and release, humility is proposed as our clearest answer as Amakers words resonate through movement and silence. We feel that our work is being created for a time such as this, especially to be premiered in the South. To complete the hour-long performance, we invite audience members into a conversation, investigating what may have been brought up for them.
Yuhas & Dancers (Y&D) is a dance company based in Columbia, SC under the direction of Meredith Yuhas. 14 women strong, the group strives to empower dancers of all shapes, sizes, and colors through professional opportunities in dance.
