The class will be an exercise in creative writing-specifically good for those wishing to improv and strengthen their creative skills. The class begins with them receiving a small prompt of Location Time in history etc...
Then the students break up into small groups and write an initial conflict based on the prompt they received. The 'improv' part begins with the groups coming up and improvising a scene using the conflict they decided upon. The purpose of the scene is to try to seek a resolution, as well as adding dialogue and character development. Focusing on the what innately emerges instead of trying to force something to happen. They then go back and write down what they discovered about their characters in the scene, discussing whether it was valuable or not and adding their scene work to the story, and learning to trust their instinctive creative and unique voice.
About the Instructor: Tori Baird has always had a passion for the art of the creative voice. As a college student, under the direction of her medieval literature professor, she created and directed a re-imagining of Romeo and Juliet for her senior thesis project. A few years back she was cast in a professional improvisation comedy show, where she performed four times a month for 3 years. During this time, she began to see the correlations between traditional creative writing, and the instant writing that is necessary for good improvisation. She believes that above all we can grow from hearing each others stories and embodying our own.
Saturday, April 13 (1:00pm-3:00pm).
