Soil Quality Considerations for Farmers in Western Washington
Soil sampling and analysis can be used not only to sustain plant and animal productivity but also to maintain or enhance air and water quality. Using data from soil sampling and analyses to tailor farm management decisions can also improve both farm profitability and environmental stewardship. In this workshop WSU soil scientist Dr. Doug Collins will teach you procedures for implementing an annual soil-testing program including when to sample, where to sample, how to take a sample, and how to use sample results in making soil amendment and soil management decisions. The workshop emphasis will be on organic management, but many of the principles also apply to conventional management.

Doug Collins is an Extension Faculty with Washington State University's Small Farms Program. His extension programs and research focus on soil quality and fruit and vegetable production for small farms. Doug has a Ph.D. in soil science from Washington State University, an M.S. in plant pathology from Montana State University, and serves on the board of directors of Tilth Producers of Washington.

Presented by the WSU Extension Small Farms Program, South Puget Sound Community College, and the Thurston Conservation District. Please direct all questions to Erik Hagan: erik.hagan@wsu.edu, 360-427-9436 ext. 17.
