Addressing Medical Consequences of Addiction: Pharmacotherapy & Neuroscience Approaches
Goal of Training The Opioid Epidemic has resulted in a new occurrence of diagnosis of Hepatitis C (HCV) in those with intravenous drug use. Participants will be educated on the disease process of HCV in an effort to encourage proactive response to addressing treatment with IVDUs. Healthcare providers hesitation to address the challenges of IVDUs and HCV will be discussed with attention on HCV elimination, quality patient care, and community health. Participants will be presented with practices for treating and managing HCV, helping to diminish stigma and encourage recovery.
Understanding the history of pharmacology and the utilization of prescribed medications to assist in the treatment of not only medical consequences of addiction can assist clinicians in determining successful options for complete and holistic treatment of those in early recovery. Participants will be informed of the current pharmacology options for the treatment of both medical consequences and behavioral health.
During early recovery, client's will struggle with periods of hyper-arousal and/or hypo-arousal which can create unique challenges to the therapeutic relationship. Participants will be directed on methods for assisting a client in distress. Interventions for monitoring client engagement, including a lack of engagement, will be reviewed. Participants will be introduced to techniques to re-engage the client in treatment sessions.
Behavioral Objectives Participants of this training will be able to: Identify prevention and control of exposure for Hepatitis C virus; List the impact of healthcare provider bias and stigma for high risk patients; Describe the pharmacology interventions for treatment of medical consequences of addiction; Indicate benefits of pharmacotherapy on neuroscience; and Identify therapeutic methods for intervention during early recovery.
