Social Isolation of Indigenous Seniors

The unique challenges experienced by the urban Indigenous population has been known for decades. However, without current knowledge of their experiences, needs and desires, it will be extremely difficult to ensure that all Indigenous seniors are treated with respect and fully engaged in their communities.

To explore social isolation of Indigenous seniors, the Edmonton Social Planning Council undertook a research study with Indigenous seniors and service providers. An advisory committee comprised of leaders from both the Indigenous and senior communities played a key role in the co-creation of research questions, participant recruitment, and data analysis.

Sandra Ngo, Research Coordinator, Edmonton Social Planning Council and Carola Cunningham, Executive Director, Ambrose Place, NiGiNnan Housing Ventures will discuss the recently released report Social Isolation of Indigenous Seniors.
