Fauré's Requiem and McDowall's Stabat Mater
This spring season the Chorale's program will include Gabriel Fauré's Requiem along with Cecilia McDowall's Stabat Mater.
The Requiem is perhaps the best-known of Fauré's large works, having premiered in its first version in 1888 in La Madeleine in Paris for a funeral mass. The French composer revised it in the late 1890s before finalizing it in 1900.
The Stabat Mater is a 13th-century hymn to Mary focusing on her suffering as Jesus hung on the cross. Cecilia McDowall's contemporary setting was written to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of St Albans Choral Society and had its world première in St Albans in 2004.
