KB3 BIO: Having come of age in the cultural melting pot of Wilmington, North Carolina, Keith Butler, Jr. has deep roots in many musical traditions. Due in no small part to his versatility and creativity on the drum set, he has become a mainstay of the Washington D.C. music scene, performing with some of the areas top bandleaders, including Herb Scott, Saltman-Knowles, Michael Bowie, Joe Brotherton, Elijah Jamal Balbed, Jeron White, Mark G. Meadows, and Levon Mikaelean. He was also a founding member of adventure music ensemble The New World and is a member of avant-jazz quartet ¡FIASCO! and indie rock band Cal Rifkin and has also composed scores for plays Vietgone and Venus, directed by Natsu Onoda-Power.
Now, Butler steps into the spotlight as a bandleader and composer with his trio, comprised of ¡FIASCO! bandmates Nelson Dougherty on guitar, and Stephen Arnold on upright bass. The Keith Butler Trio performs original compositions and arrangements by all three members, as well as interpretations of standards by the great Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis. The sound of the group is inspired in no small part by the music of Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, Charlie Haden, and Jakob Bro.
In April 2019, The Keith Butler Trio will release their first album, Greener Grasses, containing six original songs by Butler that are inspired by our human struggle with our human natures in times of adversity and times of good fortune. This album seeks to find the truth of our character, somewhere between the way we are, and the way we think we should be. There may not be any satisfying answers to be found on this release, but the keen interplay between Dougherty, Arnold, and Butler treats each song with the dynamic affection that one only finds with a working band of real friends.
The album was recorded on January 30th 2019 by Jack Kilby at Crab Shack Studios in Alexandria, Virginia, and mixed and mastered by Michael Pope at Vatican City Sound in Bowie, Maryland. ¡FIASCO! bandmate Andrew Frankhouse is featured on tenor saxophone on Yeah But.
