Northern Lights
Voci Womens Vocal Ensemble presents Northern Lights, a concert featuring rich and rarely performed works by 20th and 21st century Baltic and Scandinavian composers, including recent works from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Latvia and Estonia. Marked by long, cold winters and short but highly celebrated summers, the landscapes are reflected in the music and poetry, with themes of darkness and light, winter, night, and stars in the sky.
Since the last half of the Twentieth century, there has been a significant flowering of choral music composition in these northern European regions. Music for womens voices in particular is being produced in abundance, with great diversity and exquisite quality. Voci will bring some of this extraordinary music to life for Bay Area audiences.
The concert will feature works by Karin Rehnqvist, riks Eenvalds, Ola Gjeilo, Frode Fjellheim, Kim André Arnesen, Imant Rami, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Galina Grigorjeva, as well as arrangements of traditional songs by Veljo Tormis, Matti Hyökki and Aldonis Kalni.
