George Packer with Caitlin Flanagan
Readers of The New Yorker and The Atlantic know that George Packer knows how to tell a great story. He is one of the great nonfiction writers, whose profiles make for surprising and thrilling reading. George Packer's new book, Our Man, tackles Richard Holbrooke, one of the more complex and iconic statesmen in recent American history. From the first page to the last, Packer loads this nonfiction drama with vivid recollection, great tales of unstoppable ambition, limitless patriotism and dedication to diplomatic solution. His outsized ego was only matched by his ability to rankle those in power; he got the job done through drive and unshakable talent. Advisor to Presidents and presidential candidates John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, Holbrooke was considered by many to merit a Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomatic efforts to end the Balkan Wars. He never did attain the rank or status he so desperately craved. George Packer gives us a most dramatic rendering of recent American history.

In conversation with Caitlin Flanagan. Caitlin Flanagan is a regular contributor to The Atlantic and is the author of Girl Land, and To Hell with All That: Loving and Loathing Our Inner Housewife.
