Zoe Mulford at CranFest in the Courtyard
"perfectly crafted" - The Washington Post Zoe Mulford charms audiences with powerful, story-driven songwriting, an engaging stage presence, and an unlabored vocal style. She backs her voice with guitar or claw-hammer banjo, drawing on the traditional music of Appalachia and the British Isles and stealing a few pages from the American Songbook to create music that feels both comfortably lived-in and sparklingly fresh.
Her most recent album, Small Brown Birds (2017), consists of songs that trace a progression from winter to spring, with a message of resilience, community, and hope in times of trouble. The song "The President Sang Amazing Grace" drew the attention of Joan Baez, who covered it on her 2018 album "Whistle Down the Wind."
That song received the 2018 International Folk Music Award for Song of the Year.
Raised near Philadelphia, Zoe took up the guitar and fell in love with the banjo during a twelve-year stint in Durham, North Carolina. Four years in Washington, DC introduced her to the community of contemporary songwriters, including her label-mates at the Azalea City Recordings cooperative. In 2006, she moved to the north of England. She now divides her time between Philadelphia, PA and Manchester, UK and tours on both sides of the Atlantic.
"I don't usually like folk music, but that underwear song is pretty good." -patron, Taliano's Restaurant, Takoma Park, MD
