The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra playing the music of Allison Miller
Allison Miller is known to Charlottesville jazz fans as the electrifying drummer leading her acclaimed groups Boom Tic Boom and Parlour Game in recent concerts here. But Allison is also a renowned composer, writing music both for small groups and for large jazz orchestras. Her compositions for big band are rarely performed, but local audiences will get a chance to hear them on Sunday April 7th, when the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra performs the music of Allison Miller at Unity of Charlottesville at 7:00 pm.
The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra began in 2010 at the famed Washington DC jazz club, under the direction of saxophonist Brad Linde. It was created to preserve and promote the rich legacy of the classic big band, as well as to perform new works for large ensembles that would not otherwise be heard. Even after the Bohemian Caverns closed a few years ago, the band continues to delight crowds at venues like The Kennedy Center and Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland. The group last appeared in Charlottesville in 2017 with guest conductor Miho Hazama, performing Thelonious Monk compositions.
For this special Charlottesville appearance, Jeff Lederer will be Music Director and guest soloist. Lederer is a New York based saxophonist clarinetist/composer whose work crosses the genres of jazz, Latin and creative improvised music. In 2014 he was named in both the Critics and Readers Polls of Downbeat Magazine, recognizing his work on tenor and alto saxophones and clarinet. He has worked for many years in the Matt Wilson Quartet and the Grammy nominated Latin jazz ensemble of Bobby Sanabria.
Tickets to see the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra on Sunday April 7th at Unity of Charlottesville, 2825 Hydraulic Road, may be purchased online at Bohemian.brownpapertickets.com. The cost is $15 general admission, $12 for paid supporters of The Charlottesville Jazz Society, and $10 for students. All tickets will be $20 at the door.
