Tony Wilson's Looking Back is a multi-media event featuring a 14-piece ensemble along with narrator, sign language interpreter, dancer and video projections. The text is taken from Wilson's memoir of the same name, about an 18 month period when he was incarcerated at the St Joseph's Training School for juvenile delinquents. Twenty years after he was released from the school, many of the brothers who ran the school were charged in court, with several being sentenced to jail for physical and sexual abuse.
Bringing this painful history to the stage is an amazing array of Vancouver's finest performers: Patsy Klein -vocals, Brad Turner -trumpet, Josh Zubot, Jesse Zubot, Meredith Bates and Cam Wilson - violin, John Kastelic and Sarah Kwok - viola, Peggy Lee and Marina Hasselberg - cello, Tony Wilson guitar, James Meger - bass, Dylan van der Schyff - drums, Barbara Bourget - dance, Michael McNamara - narrator, Giorgio Magnanensi - electronics.
This special event will also feature the launch of Tony Wilson's memoir, Looking Back, and the release of Burn Down the Cornfields debut CD, This Way thru the Forest. Looking Back, Wilsons self-published book, reflects on his time at St. Josephs and the effects that would ripple through his life. Burn down the Cornfield is an ensemble comprised of a string quartet (Bates, Zubot, Kastilic and Lee) and a rhythm section (Wilson, Meger andVan der Schyff). The recording features special guest vocalist Patsy Klein on select tracks. The music and lyrics and written by Wilson and traverse many musical styles.
Wilson has been commissioned by Standing Wave, New Orchestra Workshop and Hard Rubber Orchestra, as well as by several dance companies. His compositions have been performed by such artists as Myra Melford, Marilyn Crispell, François Houle, Barre Philips, Ig Hennemann and Zubot & Dawson. He has toured across Canada, Europe and the United States, and has shared the stage with international artists Vinny Golia, John Tchicai, Myra Melford, William Parker, Gerry Hemmingway, Han Bennink, and Paul Lovens among others.
