Lionel Rogosin ON THE BOWERY (1956, 65 min, 35mm. Special thanks to Milestone Films.) Rogosins influential, semi-documentary film masterpiece chronicles three days on New Yorks skid row. Ray is a railroad worker who drifts onto the Bowery after a long bout of laying tracks. Entering the Confidence Bar & Grill, he begins a weekend of drinking until he ends up in an alley with nothing in the world. Winner of the Best Documentary award at the Venice Film Festival, ON THE BOWERY was nominated for an Academy Award, and in 2008 was added to the National Film Registry.
Rogosin is probably the greatest documentary filmmaker of all time. John Cassavetes
A milestone in American cinema. [] Rogosins film is so true to my memories of that place and that time. He accomplished his goal, of portraying the lives of the people who wound up on the Bowery, as simply and honestly and compassionately as possible. Its a rare achievement. Martin Scorsese
