American Roots: Music of the Moravians
At the time of the American War of Independence, the most sophisticated music making in America, by European standards, were unquestionably in the Moravian enclaves in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Salem, North Carolina. The Moravians were passionate about music. Besides being fully accomplished in the performance of European masters such as Haydn, they composed and performed beautiful and sophisticated pieces in that style that astonished Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.
In addition to fine works for strings and anthems for choirs, you will enchanted by the unique Moravian tradition of the trombone choir, under the direction of Dr. Nathaniel Brickens.
Featured composers are John Antes, Johan Friedrich Peter, Christian Gregor, and Johann Christian Geisler..
