Bach's Herd of Harpsichords IV
La Follia offers this fourth installment in this enormously popular series, featuring the quintessential baroque instrument: the harpsichord. We begin as always with a fine Bach concerto for solo harpsichord. But then we turn our attention to works written for harpsichord and orchestra from the 20th century. Don't worry! This is not "stiff stuff", but highly listenable, very enjoyable music which will surprise and delight you. JiMin Kim and Jeffrey-Jones Ragona join director Keith Womer on harpsichord. David Stevens, tenor, and Marcus McGuff, flute, also guest star.
Interest in the harpsichord died around 1800. However, in the mid-20th century, it was re-discovered and embraced to a degree that many classical music lovers will find surprising. We shine a spotlight on this splendid revival music. Featured are a fine concerto for harpsichord and strings by Walter Leigh (a contemporary of Vaughan Williams); the famous Elizabethan Songs by Dominic Argento, sung by David Stevens in the chamber music version with harpsichord that Argento preferred; a haunting work by Edmund Rubbra; and John Rutter's enchanting Suite Antique, featuring Marcus McGuff on flute. Oh, and lest we forget: JiMin Kim will perform Bach's famous concerto in F minor.
NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO PERFORMANCE OF THIS CONCERT ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN AUSTIN.
