SEEDArts presents the first event of its 2013 Arts Gumbo Series, Brass Bands Around the World, on Saturday, September 14 featuring Tubaluba, a New Orleans-style brass band based in Seattle. Tubaluba brings vocals, piano, drums, and a mess of horns to the performance, serving up New Orleans classics with second-line R&B tunes and booty-shaking originals. Arts Gumbo takes place at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center from 6-9 pm and will include a traditional second-line parade with the audience and a New-Orleans-style dinner.
The second line parade will take place immediately after the performance as Tubaluba will lead audience members in a second-line promenade. Tubaluba suggests attendees bring colorful scarves and umbrellas for a more authentic New Orleans parade!
At 7:30pm, Arts Gumbo will offer audiences a New Orleans-style dinner prepared by Community Kitchens Northwest and local volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering to cook and learn how to make New Orleans-style food should register with Leika Suzumura at leikasuzumura@seattletilth.org or call 206-214-8892. The free cooking workshop will run from 1-5pm.
In a new partnership with the Columbia Branch of The Seattle Public Library, Arts Gumbo is offering free Arts Gumbo Book Chats for each event. The Moviegoer by Walker Percy will be available for checkout on August 21st. Readers can attend a discussion about the book led by local author Nancy Rawles on Thursday, Sept 12, at 6:30pm at the Columbia Branch Library, 4721 Rainier Ave. So. Please call thee library at 206-386-1908 for more information.
