About Luis De La Tota Luis de La Tota is Gypsy by mother, father, and both sides of grandparents. They are a part of a large group of Gypsies that settled in Andalusia in the 1400's, migrating around the area with the grape and olive crops. 12 families in all that maintained their culture and race for years, so much so that the name Flamenco became synonymous with the name Gypsy. Luis is a beloved teacher known for his ability to share the secrets of flamenco compás with endless energy, humor and grace. Born in one of the oldest Gypsy neighborhoods of Jerez de La Frontera, El Barrio de Santiago, Luis de la Tota began his career as a percussionist at the age of 8. He takes his artistic name from his grandmother, 'La Tota', who has been an inspiration to him since his infancy. As a percussionist and palmero, Luis tours with flamenco's top artists such as Antonio Del Pipa and Maria Del Mar Moreno, and travels the world teaching pure flamenco rhythms and dance.
