CITYMUSIC ANNOUNCES 2013-14 CONCERT SEASON Performers Include Funkadesi, Teresa Walters and Buckwheat Zydeco Columbus, Ohio - CityMusic is pleased to announce its 30th concert season. Acclaimed local, national and international acts will perform at Via Vecchia Winery, The Lincoln Theatre, The Grand Valley Dale Ballroom and The Jewish Community Center. Performers represent an array of musical genres and unique backgrounds. This is CityMusic's most eclectic season to date. Concerts offer a casual and intimate listening experience. Food and drinks are served prior to each show. Those in attendance are encouraged to mingle with fellow members. CityMusic's aim is to infuse the elation of live music with the spontaneity of a social gathering. Ticket availability varies in accordance to venue size. It is important to note that ticket prices have increased this year from $25.00 to $27.50. Tickets may be purchased online at http://citymusiccolumbus.org/ or by phone at 614-223-3093. Information regarding each 2013-14 performance is as follows: September 13, 2013 - Funkadesi The Grand Valley Dale Ballroom, $27.50 This Chicago-based group combines elements of Bhangra, Punjabi folk and reggae respectively. They are five-time winners of The Chicago Music Awards, and have been lauded by Time Magazine for their uplifting musicianship. Geoff Chapman of the Toronto Star dubs them the "ideal party band." October 6, 2013 - Vagabond Opera Via Vecchia Winery, $27.50 A six-piece cabaret act from the Pacific Northwest that marries theatrical performance with the sounds of Americana, neoclassical opera, Parisian hot jazz and Ukrainian folkpunk. It is a global spectacle that features songs performed in 15 different languages. Oregon Art Beat says they "revive a time when communities gathered together to celebrate through song and dance." October 27, 2013 - Teresa Walters Via Vecchia Winery, $27.50 Teresa Walters is an award-winning American pianist. The New York Times praises her "pages of intricate passagework" and "requisite sweep, power, and warm sonority." In recent years she has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, The Salle Cortot in Paris, Moscow's Great Hall and Australia's International Conservatorium. November 10, 2013 Alisdair Fraser Via Vecchia Winery, $27.50 Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser is cited as a significant force behind the resurgence of traditional Scottish fiddling. He has released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Dawn Dance" which was voted Best Celtic Album of 1996. The Los Angeles Times says his style is "rendered with a humble sincerity, flawless virtuosity and just about the sweetest sound since Fritz Kreisler." November 14-16 2013 - Thiossane African Dance & Music Festival The Lincoln Theatre, December 15, 2013 Irish Christmas The Grand Valley Dale Ballroom, $27.50 January 12, 2014 Chris Howes Via Vecchia Winery, $27.50 Chris Howes is widely regarded as one of the leaders in jazz violin. The Jazz Journalists Association recently nominated him for "Violinist of the Year." The Minneapolis Tribune calls Christian "arguably the most intriguing young violinist in downtime to leading educational outreach activities. February 9, 2014 Dana Leong Trio Via Vecchia Winery, $27.50 Dana Leong grew up in San Francisco and studied classical cello and jazz trombone at The Manhattan School of Music. The innovative musician has collaborated with the likes of Ray Charles, Barry White and Yoko Ono. Leong's compositions are transformed by guitar and turntable in their trio incarnation. The group was a featured act at the 2011 Blue Note Jazz Festival in New York City. March 7, 2014 Buckwheat Zydeco The Grand Valley Dale Ballroom, $27.50 American musical legend Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural Jr. is the preeminent ambassador of Louisiana zydeco music, a blend of Cajun and blues. The group's 2011 effort "Lay Your Burden Down" led to a Grammy for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album. The New York Times says the group is "a down-home and high-powered celebration, meaty and muscular with a fine-tuned sense of dynamics." April 9, 2014 The Jewish Community Center, $18.00 CityMusic is a 30-year-old community-based organization dedicated to presenting the greater Columbus area with unique cultural and educational experiences in the musical arts. CityMusic's objective is to expand the musical horizons of Central Ohio residents by hosting diverse music performances and providing musical outreach to at-risk children and young adults in and around the Short North Arts District. Choral training, composition workshops, and local concerts with nationally recognized artists are among the many events that CityMusic sponsors each year. # #
