Danny Carvalho - Atherton Summer Season 2013
Danny Carvalho now 22 years old, is one of Hawaii's finest up and coming slack key guitarists. He began playing guitar at the age of 9 1/2. He became a student of Ozzie Kotani, who generously shared his time and taught Danny in the traditional style. While studying under Ozzie, Danny while simultaneously applied his new skills to learning from the music of many other guitarists, including Led Ka'apana, Gabby Pahinui, Roland Cazimero and Carlos Santana.
By age 12 he had written his first song, and performed at several Slack Key festivals around the Islands. In 2004, he became the first slack key guitarist to be featured on From The Top, a NPR show for young classical musicians, and in November 2006, he was featured on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.
In 2006, Danny released his first CD called Slack Key Journey - On My Way. In 2008 he released his second CD called Somewhere. Both were nominated for Na Hoku Hanohano awards.
After the release of Somewhere, Danny went into a period of musical and intellectual exploration. He enrolled in the University of Hawaii at Mānoa in Hawaiian Studies, and began volunteer work with the Polynesian Voyaging Society. He continued to hone his craft by studying voice from Catherine Goto and Neva Rego, and intensively studying other styles of music to further broaden his horizons. Also during this time, his music was included in The Descendants, and he was featured for a second time on A Prairie Home Companion on New Year's Eve, 2011.
In late 2011, he began work on his third album, Ke Au Hou, which is due to be released in August 2013.
