Umawit Sa Kagalakan: The Ateneo Chamber Singers in Bloomington
Since its inception in 2001, the Ateneo Chamber Singers (ACS) has established renown and respect as a group committed to stylistically informed and compelling renditions of sacred classical music, not only in the Philippines, but in the international choral scene as well. This year is yet another exciting time for the choir as it embarks on a series of projects that share wonderful music and culture to people all over the world.
At the helm of ACS long list of activities for the year is their second tour of the United States entitled Umawit sa Kagalakan (Sing for Joy) during the Fall of 2008. This is in line with the Ateneo de Manila Universitys celebration of its 150th year as a premier institution of educational excellence in the Philippines. And in accordance with the choirs mission of bringing about music and education to its community, proceeds from the project would benefit the Ateneo Scholarship Fund. We warmly invite you to witness this remarkable endeavor and to participate in this worthy cause by extending your help.
The ACS was formed by alumni of the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club, the oldest university chorale in the Philippines. After garnering top prizes in major competitions throughout Europe back in 2000 and 2001, the members decided to continue singing together beyond graduation. Since then, the ACS and its esteemed conductor Jonathan Velasco has traveled extensively all over the world for concerts and choral clinics. Their most recent stint is Awit: The First ACS European Tour in 2006. They represented the Philippines in two important choral events: the Polyfollia in Saint-L, France and the 38th Tolosa Choral Contest in Tolosa, Spain, where they emerged first prize in the Polyphony Category besting its counterparts from France, Germany, Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
In September 2008, the ACS will return to the United States, visiting top music conservatories as well as performing for Filipino and foreign communities in New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, California, and Indiana. Bloomington, as the location of the world-renowned IU Jacobs School of Music, is a much important destination for the choir. Here, they would be sharing their music through workshops, choir interactions, and concerts. The entire project is part of the sesquicentennial anniversary celebration of its mother institute, the Ateneo de Manila University.
The Ateneo has long been regarded to be one of the top five universities in the Philippines. The core of its educational philosophy - forming men and women for others - goes hand-in-hand with its reputation of providing quality education across generations. Education in top schools in the Philippines, including the Ateneo, costs around $3,000 each year, which is relatively cheap compared to educational costs in the US. However the average annual family income of Filipinos go only to about $4,000, meaning that only a select few can afford to obtain education from quality institutions. Thus, for its 150th year, the university aims to extend its reach by increasing the number of scholarships, especially for underprivileged yet deserving students. The ACS joins this worthwhile cause by dedicating proceeds from its projects this year to the universitys annual scholarship fund.
