Hate Mail by Jack Heifner
A Red Carpet Benefit for the Stella Adler Theatre
"Hate Mail" tells the story of a lifelong correspondence between Daniel and Penny, two Beverly Hills brats, who can't stop writing vicious things to one another as they trade news and insults about their increasingly dysfunctional lives. Something of an homage to A.R. Gurney.
About the Playwright:
Jack Heifner's play, Vanities, ran off Broadway for 1785 performances and in September of 1979 it became the longest running play in off Broadway history. The original production co-starred Kathy Bates. Heifner began his relationship with the Stella Adler Theatre Company in the early 90's with the premiere of his play "Heartbreak," which ran for four months at the World Theatre and won five critics awards. Hate Mail was originally written as a benefit for the company and starred Mark Ruffalo and Kristina Loggia. Put in a drawer for almost two decades, the script suddenly found its way to a successful production in London. Productions in Milwaukee, Texas and Washington have followed.
