MYRTLE: a musical comedy melodrama based on the story of Esther
Will that vile and evil Hascombe have his wicked way? Will sweet Myrtle save her people? And what is the real reason Cyrus D Walton (wealthy and eccentric landowner) can't sleep?! The plot thickens (and so do the gags)! Family audiences can boo and hiss the villain or cheer the heroes in MYRTLE, set in the 1800s American West. Also featured are audience sing-alongs from yesteryear. MYRTLE is written by Jeannette Clift-George with music by Steven Jones and features Waypoint regulars Sarah Carver, Paul Petersen and Amy Lyons with Tim Arrington and Sheri Aken. Myrtle is directed by Waypoint's artistic director, Melanie David with pianist Josh Pielemeier. The musical melodrama is based on the biblical account of the fourth century Persian empire, where Jews were taken in as subjects. King Ahasuerus' wife, Queen Vashti, was executed for failing to follow his orders. The king ordered a national beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, found favor in his eyes and became the new queen--though she refused to divulge that she was Jewish. Esther's original Hebrew name was "Hadassah"--meaning "myrtle." Running time: 2 hrs, 15 with 1 intermission and 7 min of fun olios.
