Spice Journeys: A Visit to Hollie's Herb Farm
As we were planning this journey to expand our spice palates, it occurred to us that we needed to include HERBS in the conversation as a separate entity. Because they are, well, different, correct? Herbs, in both fresh & dried forms, add complexity and tastes apart from 'spices'... At least we think? With these thoughts and questions in mind, we thought we'd explore the subject further!
Join us on Saturday, July 20th from 11am to 1pm for a visit to Hollie's Homegrown (www.hollieshomegrown.com), an organic and incredibly diverse herb farm in Moraga. Hollie will share her herbal expertise with us - first with a tour of the gardens, discussing growing, harvesting & storing techniques, and then on to cooking tips. She'll have us taste a variety of herbs in different forms, both fresh & cooked, to learn more about flavor differences and how best to highlight them. Lemon Basil? Amethyst Basil? African Basil? Pineapple Mint? Ginger Mint? Lavendar Mint? With over 40 varieties of herbs - my lord, the choices!
As we continue our discussions & tastings, we'll gather in the garden for a potluck lunch. Please bring a dish inspired by (surprise, surprise!) herbs, meant to serve 3-4. Alongside our meal, Hollie will offer her incredible herbal teas, made straight from the garden!
Cost is $10, $5 of which goes to Slow Food East Bay and the work we do in the local sustainable food community. Children under 10 are free.
p.s. We've scheduled our Ethiopian class for August 4th, and Nigerian will be coming up the 2nd week of September.... And negotiations are under way for a Oaxacan evening and Japanese, as well! More details to come soon.
