Bethel Arts Third Thursdays Jazz at La Zingara
Marshall McDonald Whether you heard him playing lead alto during his 18 year tenure with The Count Basie Orchestra, or playing tenor saxophone with Paquito D'Rivera or baritone saxophone with Abdullah Ibrahim or clarinet solos with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Marshall keeps the swing and dance that he learned in his hometown of Pittsburgh, at the heartbeat of his playing. A seasoned reedman, having played over 30 years in the New York City area, he is known for his ability to play all of the saxophones and woodwinds, with a unique approach to each one.
Roberta Piket - Keyboards Appearing at La Zingara for the second time, the daughter of a European composer and a Great American Songbook singer, native New Yorker Roberta Piket is a pianist and organist who loves to swing while exploring the more adventurous harmonic possibilities of jazz and improvised music Roberta is from Queens, NY. Her father gave her her first piano lessons when she was seven. Roberta began serious music studies in her early teens, studying jazz piano with Walter Bishop, Jr and classical piano with Vera Wels. She has toured, played, composed and taught all over the world.
Jeff Fuller - Bass Has also played at La Zingara before, Jeff Fuller holds a BA cum laude and an MM in composition from Yale University. He is a bassist who has appeared with Dizzy Gillespie, Mose Allison, Scott Hamilton, "Papa" Jo Jones and Gerry Mulligan. He has made worldwide tours and recordings with Lou Donaldson and Paquito D'Rivera, with each of whom he recorded three albums. He is a commissioned composer and a jazz and Latin music arranger.
George Coleman Jr - Drums The son of tenor saxophonist George Coleman and organist Gloria Coleman, George Coleman, Jr. is a drummer whom Billy Higgins called, one of the most talented and creative young drummers on the New York scene. He received his first drum set from Max Roach and he studied with Sam Ulano, Michael Carvin, Harold Mabern, and Jamil Nasser. He worked for years as chemical engineering by day and a drummer by night (working with artists like Dakota Staton) before deciding in 2007 to devote himself full time to music.
