Welcome to the Doll Den
Book by Ethan Ness and Sarah Plotkin Music by Emily Johnson-Erday and Rev. Yolanda Lyrics by Joshua Langman Produced by Electric Eye Ensemble
In Memphis, Tennessee, we meet the first all-girl radio station, WGAL. Its 1955 and the jockettes are making radio for women from their studio, the Doll Den. But as time marches forward the shtick gets old and the women want more. When the times change, will the women be able to keep up? Inspired by real events, Welcome to the Doll Den is a musical that tells a story about masks, identity, and the cost of success.
Welcome to the Doll Den is an original musical devised by members of Electric Eye Ensemble over the course of three years and four workshop productions and readings. Now in its fifth iteration, it has grown into a full musical with potential for theater festivals. The reading will be followed by a talk back and the collaborators are eager for audience feedback.
Welcome to the Doll Den was developed through a staged reading at The Drama League in August 2017, a residency and workshop production at The Tank in February 2017, a work-in-progress production at Dixon Place in June 2016, and a Rough Draft Residency at The Drama League in June 2016. Subsidized studio space provided by the A.R.T./New York Creative Space Grant, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
