The Soldier
The Soldier by award-winning playwright Rachel Wagstaff is inspired by the life of poet / soldier Rupert Brooke and his contemporaries at the outbreak of WW1. It moves between London, Belgium and the Aegean where he died on his way to fight at Gallipoli. Brooke is played by Tom Kay who played the lead in MESH Theatre's acclaimed JOURNEY'S END in Ypres, Belgium and in the 2018 UK tour of BIRDSONG.
This captivating play is surprisingly modern in its treatment of war and relationships, enriching WW1 literature and history in the way only live 'in situ' theatre can achieve. It references the works of several other poets of the era as well as key political events and figures, including Churchill.
