Fusions Continuum
CityMusic Columbus in cooperation with the Melton Center presents Fusions Continuum at The Jewish Community Center on April 9, 2013 at 7:30pm. Doors Open at 6:30pm
"Fusions was born out of a connection and deep mutual respect for each other's musicianship between these three performers. In collaborating, the three discovered the beautiful resonance of their instruments and the many commonalities between Arabic Art music and Jewish music (which are rarely heard together). In 1996, this collaboration culminated in the Fusions Concert Tour, which included the musicians' sharing their respective cultural music, performing in each other's musical styles, and premiering an original composition for the three instruments by Wiesenberg that combined elements from both cultures' music. The Fusions project was performed in Israel and in nine U.S. cities, and was well received.
Since the Fusions project, the three musicians have continued to cultivate their friendship and musical collaboration. In 2007, Uri Vardi, through a grant from UW-Madison Chancellor Wiley's office, commissioned a Double Concerto for Cello and Oud, 'The Forty Steps', by Joel Hoffman, which he premiered with Taiseer Elias and the Madison Symphony Orchestra. The Concerto was performed three times during the 2008 concert series of the MSO. Menachem Wiesenberg and Taiseer Elias have continued a duo collaboration, both in Israel and in Europe.
The three artists feel passionate about the value of collaborating and connecting through music across their two cultures that have so often experienced conflict. They hope that sharing this connection and resonance with audiences would result in both a moving musical experience and a different view of what is possible between these two great cultures. To this end, they are planning a concert tour spanning Israel and Europe in December 2012 - January 2013, and a U.S. in April 2013.
The group has commissioned a Duo for Oud and Cello by composer Jan Radzynski (with a grant from the Wisconsin Cello Society). They also intend to include in the program: typical Arabic Art Music for solo Oud, an arrangement of an Arabic piece for Oud and cello, authentic Jewish music for cello and piano, an Overture composed especially for the three instruments by Mencachem Wiesenberg, and compositions from the 1996 Fusions Tour. The program will conclude with Wiesenberg's Lamento, a trio for the three instruments.
In addition to performing, the musicians would be happy to offer discussions, masterclasses, and seminars." SPECIAL TWO FOR ONE PRICING - PURCHASE ONLINE UP TO 4PM WEDNESDAY
