Hexham Orpheus choir with Director Mark Edwards will perform Michael Tippett 'A Child of our Time' in the magnificent setting of the transept of Hexham Abbey with full orchestra and Soloists Rachel Dyson Soprano, Valerie Reid Alto, Austin Gunn Tenor, and Graeme Danby Bass.
Michael Tippett (1905 - 1998) composed 'A Child of our Time' between 1939 and 1941 in response to the assassination in 1938 of a German diplomat by a young Jewish refugee and the ensuing violence of Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass, Nazi pogroms against the Jewish population and the start of World War two. Tippett's oratorio deals with these incidents in the context of the experiences of oppressed people generally, with the inclusion of several well known African American spirituals representing universal suffering. It carries a strongly pacifist message of ultimate understanding and reconciliation.
The concert will start with the overture to Verdi's opera 'The Force of Destiny' first performed in St Petersburg in 1862.
