Sir Alfred Hitchcock KBE (1899 1980) was an English film director and producer, widely regarded as one of the most influential film-makers in the history of cinema. He directed 53 feature films in a career spanning six decades. He didn't have a blonde in every picture, but all the films for which he is most remembered have one in the forefront. His blondes are as beautiful as they are mysterious and contradictory, helping shape the pictures into masterpieces of suspense. Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint, Janet Leigh and Tippi Hedren are among the auteur's most memorable blondes.
This course covers 3 Hitchcock movies as well as a biographical movie entitled Hitchcock.
Rear Window is a 1954 mystery thriller staring James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, and Raymond Burr. The entirety of Rear Window takes place in and around the back courtyard connecting apartments in the West Village of New York City. L. B. Jeffries is a photojournalist who broke his leg while on the job. He is going stir crazy, having been stuck inside for the six weeks. He entertains himself by moving his wheelchair next to the rear window of his apartment and watching his neighbors through binoculars. He involves Lisa, his refined Park Avenue girlfriend, in solving a murder committed by his neighbor.
Vertigo is a 1958 film noir psychological thriller. The film stars James Stewart as former police detective John "Scottie" Ferguson and Kim Novak. Scottie is forced into early retirement because an incident in the line of duty has caused him to develop acrophobia (an extreme fear of heights) and vertigo (a false sense of rotational movement). He is hired by Gavin Elster, as a private investigator, to follow Gavin's mistress Judy Barton, pretending to be Elsters real wife, Madeleine, in a plot to kill Madeleine. The movie is shot in San Francisco and Mission Juan Bautista.
Hitchcock is a 2012 biographical film based on Stephen Rebello's Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho. The film centers on the relationship between film director Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) during the making of Psycho, a controversial horror film that became one of the most acclaimed and influential works in Hitchcocks career. Psycho is a 1960 psychological horror film starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, John Gavin, Vera Miles and Martin Balsam. The film centers on the encounter between Marion Crane (Leigh), who ends up at a secluded motel after stealing money from her employer, and the motel's disturbed owner-manager, Norman Bates (Perkins). The murder of Leigh's character in the shower is the film's pivotal scene and one of the most shocking scenes in all of cinema. It set a new level of acceptability for violence, deviant behavior and sexuality in American films, and is considered to be the earliest example of the slasher film genre.
Each session will consist of a 30-minute commentary and discussion followed by a 2.5-hr video for each of the movies. You will receive a syllabus.
