This year's keynote, "Ignite Your Creativity and Trust the Process," will be delivered by Deo Mwano:

Deo Mwano is a visionary choreographer and dancer. He is a versatile choreographer and dancer who dances various styles of dance and music. He has been studying dance for over 20 years in the styles of fusion jazz, street jazz, African dance and variety of hip hop styles. He has conducted dance workshops all over the U.S. Mwano has been impacting people all over the United States since the early age of 11 and it was only a matter of time before his impact reached the far corners of the world. His choreography has been performed in South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia through Youth with a Mission Performing Arts Program. Mwano worked with the Pakistani Educational Leadership Institute teaching dance and as a community advisor. He has had opportunities to showcase his choreography nationally and internationally. In 2010 Deo appeared in a TV special for the show, Dancing With The Star where he choreographed and performed with his brothers and the professional dancers of the show. Deo enjoyed collaborating with Kim Johnson whom he co-choreographed the cha cha/ Hip Hop routine he performed on the show. Deo was able to use his creative thinking of merging the two styles together into a fun entertaining number.

Deo Mwano became an adjunct professor at Southern New Hampshire University teaching dance courses that fuse with cultural studies. Two of his special topic courses Evolution of Hip Hop and Theory of Movements and Practicality were very popular for students who wanted to fulfill an Art requirement course. Theory of Movements and Practicality, explored how dance and movements are part of everything we do. The course dissects sounds, lyrics and melodies, while discovering how it connects to movements and storytelling. The second course, Evolution of Hip Hop explores the culture of urban city and urban music in how it contributed to the creation of hip-hop dance. The course highlights the connection of funk, disco, swing, and tap dance into hip hop dancing.

Deo is always looking for opportunities to collaborate with creative individuals and organizations. He is the founder of the dance movement called, Movement From Above. Movement From Above dancers travel with Deo to perform during some of his presentations.

Morning Workshops:

M1 Embodying Brave Space as a Therapist in White Supremacy Culture

Presented by: Heather Kuhn & Susan Oetgen
A trauma-informed, participatory workshop for those who feel ready to take a critical look at how individual somatic psychotherapists perpetuate systemic white supremacy in their practice.  Using the Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture as defined by Kenneth Jones and Tema Okun in Dismantling Racism: A Workbook for Social Change Groups as our primary source, we will seek guidance from our own bodies to observe, feel in to, and disrupt patterns strategically reinforced by shame. Together, lets create a brave space that fuels our commitment to dismantling systems that cause harm.  All welcome.

M2 Universal Rhythm and Flow: Expressive Orisha Movement in Clinical and Wellness Spaces

Presented by:Kim Burden, MA, LCMHC, LCAT, BC-DMT, RDT/BCT, CP, RSMTE
This primarily experiential workshop presents new developments for applying rhythms, movement and expressive qualities of West African Orisa (Oh-ree-sha) practice in dance/movement therapy and wellness settings. Through energetic movement experiences and discussion, the workshop will highlight the presenters recent work applying appropriate elements of Orisha work with individual clients in a private practice setting and with a non-clinical group of dancers in a personal growth setting. Although Ifa Orisa involves spiritual ceremony, this presentation presents selected aspects of the practice appropriate for secular wellness and healing and includes discussion of relevant cultural and social justice themes.

M3 If Frida Kahlo Were a Dance/Movement Therapist, What Would Mary Whitehouse Have to Say About It?

Presented by: Malinda LaVelle
This workshop explores, share, and questions what it means to be a dance/movement therapist (DMT) with chronic pain by deconstructing assumptions about physical capabilities required for the profession. While much discussion of able-bodied-ness as it relates to clients we work with exists, little to no literature is available about presumptions we make about physical capabilities of DMT's. Using the bodies and work of Frida Kahlo and Mary Whitehouse as reference points, this workshop takes an auto-ethnographical approach (using the presenter's personal experience and connecting it to wider sociocultural meanings) to exploring ableism within the training of DMT's. The workshop will facilitate awareness of this topic through a combination of presentation, embodied experientials, and group discussion.

M4 Movement and Sound and the Embodied Basis of Social Being

Presented by:  Rebecca R. Burrill, Ed.D.
This workshop targets the absence of body-heart-imagination--kinesthetic-empathic-aesthetic intelligences--as foundationally central to human health and well-being in social discourse. The workshop is an embodied exploration, beginning in utero, of the basis of movement and sound as primary patterning for the non-verbal languaging that is at the heart of these intelligences, as well as at the heart of the organization of deeper meaning in human communication, relationship, expression, and social value. We engage these explorations as platform for questioning the place of mechanical intelligence in robotics and AI.

A2 Exploring DMT for Individuals Living With Movement Disorders
