LATIN JAZZ @ MONDO
The acclaimed Bossa Brasil Quartet comes to downtown Summit, NJ for a special Five Roads CD release concert event! Come be part of the audience at the popular monthly Latin Jazz @ Mondo concert series on Saturday, March 23, 2018 at 8:00pm. TEATRO Si brings to you this opportunity when accomplished Brazilian jazz drummer Mauricio de Souza and his Bossa Brasil group bring their critically acknowledged sounds to the stage at MONDO, located at 426 Springfield Avenue in downtown Summit, NJ.
For the past 14 years, Maurício de Souza has been performing and directing his own groups. Originally from Brasilia, Brasil, de Souza has released three commercial albums and has performed at the prestigious Blue Note in NYC, the Whitney Museum, Saint Peter's Church, Jazz at Kitano Hotel, Garage Jazz Restaurant, NJPAC, Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival, and the Westfield Sweet Sounds Downtown Jazz Festival among many others.
Mauricios albums: "Here. There...", "Different Directions" and Trajetorias have achieved high critic and public acclaim. The albums were covered in Jazz Week and were featured on WBGO, Sirius XM, Pandora, Music Choice, and numerous radio stations in the US, Canada, Brazil, Canary Islands, and Venezuela. De Souza has also been featured in numerous publications, including the cover of Hot House Jazz Magazine (and Different Directions was reviewed on "Winning Spins"), Jazz Times Magazine, Modern Drummer Magazine and Blog, New York City Jazz Record, Jazz Inside New York, Revista Gente, The Star Ledger and others.
This special concert features selections from the new FIVE ROADS recording, Maurício de Souza's fourth album. The new CD features Bossa Brasil in 9 tracks of compositions by Maurício de Souza and two of his arrangements of "O Barquinho" by Roberto Menescal and "Ave Maria" by Franz Schubert as a bossa. For his compositions, de Souza mixes Brazilian jazz rhythms with American jazz and classical music textures and melodic ideas. The styles range from Bossa Novas, to Baião, to a Waltz and a stylized Maracatú. The music is lyrical, driving, and soothing.
Bossa Brasil also performs standards of the Brazilian jazz repertoire. The sophisticated and pulsating arrangements include original compositions as well as popular standards by Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Hermeto Pascoal, Pat Metheny and Freddie Hubbard. The group performs instrumental music with variable instrument configurations that combine bass, drums, piano, vibraphone, sax and more.
For this exciting live performance event at Latin Jazz @ Mondo the group will feature Andrew Beals (alto sax), Bob Rodriguez (piano), Dave Kingsnorth (bass) and Maurício de Souza (drums).
