Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo
An Anarchist railway worker accidentally fell to his death from the fourth floor of the Police Headquarters in Milan. On the day our play takes place, a maniac, with a penchant for dreaming up characters and then acting them out, is being questioned in the very same Police HQ. When, he hears information that the case of the anarchists death is being reopened. What follows is a farce of mistaken identity and a good course of crooked coppers getting a big dose of their own medicine.
The real-world death of Giuseppe Pinelli, an anarchist railwayman, just before midnight on the 15th of December 1969, forms the basis of this play. Dario Fo wanted to bring to light the power the state holds to those who either didnt read well or didnt care much for the greater goings on in the country. A state can organise a massacre as well as the mourning period that follows it. What is more fitting on the day the UK is to leave the EU than Accidental Death of an Anarchist? A play which encourages its audience to question the relationship between those who have power and those who do not.
