The sparkling crown jewel of Restoration Comedy, William Congreve's THE WAY OF THE WORLD first graced the English stage in the year 1700, and has been on pretty much everybody's list of best comedies ever since. The play is about--what else? sex, money, love and power. And in the claustrophobic, hothouse, upper-class world of the play, everybody is connected to everybody else. Everybody is related to somebody else, or used to be married to somebody else, or is in competition with somebody else, or is covertly in love with somebody else, or all of the above; and secrets and lies and impersonations and affectations are just "the way of the world." The plot spins and careens and twists and turns as the characters bob and weave and dance and maneuver and try feverishly to outwit one another on the way to the finish line where fortune and love await them.
Though the play was written in 1700, it feels quite astonishingly modern, and the people and their relationships are immediately and hilariously recognizable. Jumping into the time machine of this centuries-old play is like looking into a crazy funhouse mirror wherein we may see ourselves and our own world. So, since it is we are who the play is about, instead of setting it 1700, we have decided to drop it smack dab in the middle of 2019, and the clothes, the music and the manners reflect who we are in our status-obsessed, fashion-forward, over-indulgent, 1%, social-media-drenched, Age of the Selfie.
THE WAY OF THE WORLD opens Thursday, March 7 at 7:30pm and continues Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9 at 7:30, with a closing performance on Sunday, March 10 at 2pm. Tickets are $15.00 if purchased here on brownpapertickets.com. Tickets will increase to $20.00 if bought at the door.
