"The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"
Jacques Demys classic 1964 film made a star of actress Catherine Deneuve, and broke new ground for the musical genre in film. Its closer to operetta in film than the traditional musical (all the dialogue is sung), and composer Michel Legrand wrote his score to fit speech patterns. The story is a simple one of love and class distinctions, as young Genevieve has to choose between two suitors, one an auto mechanic, the other a wealthy diamond merchant. Its the way the story is told that is so enchanting, though! Nominated for five Academy Awards.
91 minutes, Not Rated.
