In hopes of planting a vision in the heart of Winchester, one that believes the spirit of the past can be redeemed and our future, as fellow citizens, more richly nurtured, The Greater Clark Foundation and Clark County Community Foundation have joined together to bring I Was Here to Clark County. The mission of the project is twofold to create a memorial to those who were sold into slavery and in doing so, to seek a path beyond who we were and move toward a vision of who we could be. The project aims to instill a deeper understanding of our common humanity and to create a means to see the world with different eyes. The repercussions from slavery are not merely a 'southern issue'. It is a national wound that we, as fellow Americans, must work together to acknowledge and heal.
I Was Here is public art that manifests in street museums bringing unexpected content and beauty while redefining the space they inhabit. Urbandesign.org defines Civic art as the sum total of the architecture, public spaces, monuments, urban design, and landscape of a city, but it is far more than the sum of the parts. Civic art is place making into art that creates timeless civic values and helps define cultures. This project serves as a means to integrate the transcendent experience of art into the everyday business of living - reminding all of the power we have to transform the world. We invite you to join us on March 16 to walk the street with us and learn more about the Ancestor Spirit Portraits.
This event is free, but attendees must register. Participants should meet at The Winchester Sun at 9:30 AM. The event will conclude at Leeds Center for the Arts for a community conversation at 10:30 AM to learn from each other and move forward with purpose in an effort to grow within our community.
In conjunction with this event, a reception will be held at Leeds Center for the Arts on Friday, March 15, 2019 at 7:30 PM. Tickets for the reception are available on our website.
