Tour of the Historic Oakridge Estate, Built by Actress Barbara Stanwyck & Zeppo & Marion Marx
Saturday, March 16 2:00 pm
This historic landmark was not built in the Art Deco style, but the cast of characters associated with the property are among some legends of the Art Deco era - not to mention that the prominent architect Paul R. Williams designed the 6000 square foot Irish farmhouse that Barbara Stanwyck envisioned for her ranch atop a hill in Northridge, CA in the San Fernando Valley.
This 90-minute docent led walking tour of the house features 80 years of history that includes everyone from actress Barbara Stanwyck, Marx Brother Zeppo Marx, actor Robert Taylor, architect Paul R. Williams, actor Jack Oakie and his wife Victoria, actress Janet Gaynor and her fashion and costume designer husband Adrian Adolph Greenberg, plus the history of the Marwyck Ranch and (as it was later renamed) Northridge Farms.
In 1937, architect Paul R. Williams and Barbara Stanwyck, then one of Hollywood's highest paid actresses, collaborated to build a 6000 square foot Irish farmhouse on a hilltop in Northridge, California. The views were of the entire San Fernando Valley and Marwyck Ranch, her 130-acre Thoroughbred Farm, co-owned with Zeppo and Marion Marx. Jack Oakie purchased the house in 1941. It remained the Oakie family home for over six decades. Jack Oakie renamed the property Oakridge. Oakies widow achieved historic landmark status for the property in 1990.
Parking and accessibility: Due to limited parking, carpooling is encouraged. Guests can also park off-site or on the south side of Devonshire Street.
Handicap access is limited. They have a book of photographs of the upstairs bedrooms for those who are unable to climb the stairs. You can use walkers and canes to successfully tour the property, but not all first-floor doors are wide enough to accommodate those in wheelchairs.
Tickets are $20
More information about the property is available here: https://www.theoakridgeestate.org/history
Policies: This tour is open to members of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles only at this time. If we have space, members who have individual memberships can bring a guest. Email us to express your interest in bringing a guest and if space opens up, we will let you know.
Guests are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour and to wear low-heeled, comfortable walking shoes since there are unlevel surfaces. The soles don't necessarily have to be rubber. There are no restroom facilities inside the residence, but there is a portable toilet on site. The LA Department of Recreation and Parks has a policy of no food or beverages in the house.
There is a large shopping mall across the street with an Outback restaurant and smaller cafes for those who travel distances and wish to grab a bite before or after touring the estate. Some of us may go to the historic Valley Inn following the tour. All are welcome to join and more details will be available to ticket buyers.
