YPIN Rapid Response: All Eyes on Turkey
The Young Professionals International Network (YPIN) of the World Affairs Council is pleased to have the opportunity to present a discussion on the recent protests sparked in Istanbul, Turkey. A distinguished panel of experts and activists will discuss the situation leading to protesters occupying Taksim Square's Gezi Park. This is the largest protest Turkey has seen in decades and panelists will help attendees understand the historical and political context that has led to the civic unrest.

We will also Skype a live interview with a protestor in Turkey who will give a firsthand account of the protests and the police response. The role of Turkish and international media will also be discussed as well as how social media has contributed to unifying the protest movement throughout the country.

Panelists Include:

Sarper Celenk, resident, Istanbul (via Skype)
Bryan Cohen, Reporter, Globalist (tentative)
Resat Kasaba, Director, The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies -Stanley D. Golub Chair of International Studies
Further Speakers to be announced

Seattle has a large Turkish community and panelists will attempt to explain the many perspectives of the current civic conflict in Turkey. There will be a questions and answers period as well as an informal reception after the panel discussion starting at 8:30pm.

It is an exciting time in the world and we look forward to seeing you there!
