What: The MIKE MURLEY TRIO consists of Mike Murley (sax), Reg Schwager (guitar) and Steve Wallace (bass).
They will be joined by RENEE ROSNES - pianist, composer, radio host, and artistic director of the Oscar Peterson International Jazz Festival - who will be flying in from New York to join them here at Jazz in the Kitchen on Juno Awards weekend. On the following day, Renee will be recording, here, with the trio.
The four musicians being featured on this special evening hail originally from across Canada - Vancouver/Regina, Sudbury, East York, and Truro.
Between the four of them they boast 2 Grammy awards, 30 Juno awards, and roughly 650 recordings as leaders, co-leaders and sidemen.*
In addition, this is a big weekend for Schwager, Murley, and Rosnes as they are all nominated for awards at this year's Juno ceremonies which are being presented on March 17th:
- Murley for Jazz Album of the Year (group) for "Liebman/Murley Quartet Live at UofT" - Schwager for his work on Diana Panton's CD "solstice/equinox" (nominated for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year) - Rosnes for Best Jazz Solo Album of the Year. The title track of Renee's CD, "Beloved of the Sky", was inspired by a painting by West Coast artist, Emily Carr.
