Youth in Focus Summer Camps 2019
Summer Camps are open to youth 9 - 19 years old (see descriptions for age requirements). Maximum of 10 youth per camp. Camps are held at Youth in Focus (2100 24th Ave S, Seattle 98144). All equipment and supplies are included in the cost.
Half Day camps will have morning and afternoon sessions ($350)
Camps for 9 - 12 year olds:
GREAT OUTDOORS NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY - HALF DAY, July 15th - July 19th (9:30am - 12:30pm) - 1 spot open - HALF DAY, July 29th - August 2nd (1:30pm - 4:30pm) - 3 spots open
Learn the fundamentals of DSLR photography while exploring some of Seattle's beautiful parks. Get up close with nature while building your portfolio, edit your images in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and compare and critique with your classmates to refine your masterpieces.
Camps for 13 - 19 year olds:
DARKROOM DEEPDIVE - 5 spots open HALF DAY, July 15th - 19th (1:30pm - 4:30pm) Learn the magic of film photography including basic and advance techniques of the camera and darkroom. Students will do on location shooting, use 35mm film, develop and print their images, and learn composition, alternative processes and critique methods.
DIGITAL DEEPDIVE - full HALF DAY, July 22nd - 26th (9:30am - 12:30pm) Combine the foundations and fundamentals of digital photography with post-production in the digital lab to best tell your story. Use DSLRs to capture images on location and use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to perfect them. Explore retouching, multiple exposure, layers, comping and more as you fine tune your photography skills.
STORYTELLING THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY (digital) - 6 spots open HALF DAY, July 22nd - 26th (1:30pm - 4:30pm) Artists have been using photography as a way to tell stories since its inception. This class explores that history as well as how we can use modern digital photography and imaging as a storytelling medium. Over the course we will be looking at how light, color and composition can affect moods, how to create an effective series of photos, and learning to use our own narrative voice.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY (darkroom) - 1 spot open HALF DAY, July 22nd - July 26th (1:30pm - 4:30pm) Explore Seattle with a 35mm SLR in hand to capture candid moments, street scenes, graffiti art and more as you shoot on-location and build your portfolio. Process and develop your own film, print photos in the darkroom and engage in meaningful critique with other photographers to improve your work.
Youth in Focus mission is to empower youth, through photography, to experience their world in new ways and to make positive choices for their lives. We put cameras in the hands of youth and place them in a challenging environment surrounded by high quality talented teachers, nurturing adult volunteer mentors, and create a strong community of support. Through photography our students find their voice, identity, creativity, and gain new confidence in their worth and abilities.
