Profs & Pints: The Real Mary, Queen of Scots (Special Matinee)
(Special matinee staged in response to high demand.)
Profs and Pints presents: "The Real Mary, Queen of Scots," the true story of Scotland's most (in)famous monarch, with Mikki Brock, associate professor of history at Washington and Lee University and scholar of demonology, witchcraft, and religion in early modern Scotland. Professor Mikki Brock, who has left Profs and Pints audiences spellbound with her talks on witches and demons, returns to the Bier Baron stage to tackle a royally fascinating subject based on her research of Scottish history In December 2018, "Mary, Queen of Scots" made its debut in theaters across America. Despite its dazzling cinematography and impressive performances, the film distorts the true history of a monarch whose life was stranger than fiction. A sixteenth-century Stewart with Tudor blood, the young queens reign was shaped by complex religious reformation, political intrigue, and of course, a heavy dose of scandal. Why does Mary Stewart continue to capture the imaginations of people around the world? Was her downfall a matter of luck or misstep? And what can we learn from the tumultuous life of Scotlands most tragic monarch? Come journey beyond the myth and the movie to learn the true story of Mary Queen of Scots. Youll hear how she was accused of murdering her philandering second husband, who happened to also be her second cousin; how she was once the subject of a (wildly inaccurate) Nazi propaganda film; and how her tomb at Westminster has reportedly been the site of many miracles. Youll also learn about the loyal dog who stuck with her to her end.
It will be a talk full of sex, scandal, and Scots behaving badly. See ye thair! (Profs and Pints talks begin a half our after the listed start times. Please allow yourself plenty of time to get seated and settled in.)
