Secret Drum Band + Pow Pow
Secret Drum Bands debut album, Dynamics (XRAY Records, August 2017), sees composers Lisa Schonberg, Allan Wilson, and Heather Treadway delving headway into creating living, breathing soundscapes, rich in rhythmic textures. Driven by five drummers, each song also employs an array of affected vocals, guitar, and synthesizers from noise musicians, often mimicking sounds found in nature. Secret Drum Band's tour performances will also feature new works Schonberg composed while in residence at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. These new compositions are based on soundscapes and ant acoustics in the Brazilian Amazon and HJ Andrews Biological Station in Oregon. Stylistically, Secret Drum Band pull from a unique vantage point, drawing allusions from Liquid Liquid, The Creatures, and Crash Worship, as well as the composers previous groups Explode Into Colors and !!! (chk chk chk). The albums eight tracks were written in response to locations in the Mojave Desert, logging sites in Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon, and Hawaii, where Schonbergs entomology work has helped the native Hylaeus bees attain endangered species status. "Kpukapuaulus" vibrant polyrhythmic cadences insinuate an endless vortex of bird calls, while the cacophonous tension of "Jazz (Timber Sale)" simultaneously evokes the complexity of the forest flora and the anxiety of approaching logging trucks. For us, music is the most publicly effective (and personally healing) vehicle to make statements about environmental issues, adds Schonberg. All pieces are carefully scored by Schonberg and Wilson, allowing each musician to realize the complex and intricate arrangements in a live setting. Dynamics aptly captures this concentrated effort, allowing sharp details to roar within the thunder of the drums.
Christopher Sean Powell (aka Pow Pow, aka Pay Pow, aka Powserati) is a self-taught rhythm scholar, producer, and electronic music-maker living in Philadelphia, PA. As a main contributor in the Philadelphia art and sound collective Need New Body, which fused improvisation with popular song structures, Powell began a career of international recording and performance, creating music at the nexus of art and entertainment. Since 1999, he has collaborated, recorded, and toured worldwide with a diverse spectrum of artists and musicians, including the Sun Ra Arkestra, Yoko Ono, and the Boredoms. Powells work in the eclectic and high energy Philadelphia band Man Man has helped focus his talent as a leader in the live performance context. Together with Griffin Rodriguez, Powell explores popular music based on jazz and non-Western rhythms as the Los Angeles production duo Icy Demons. His latest music projects include Adventuredrum, a conceptually-based performance Powell composes for an ensemble of drummers, GRANT$, a hip hop duo with artist Tim Fite, and Modular On The Spot, a worldwide synth collective which performs improvised musical sets on modular synthesizer systems in various outdoor locations. Powells body of work has most recently expanded to creating instruments for NYC/Philly based synthesizer company Critter & Guitaris Organelle keyboard.
