Stef Chura and Winded at Drkmttr
Stef Chura (MI) and Winded (NY) come to Nashville during SXSW season to play beautiful music for your ears.
Stef Chura (MI) https://stefchuraband.bandcamp.com/ STEFA CHURA'S debut studio album, Messes (out 1/27 on Urinal Cake Records), is born of her years of experience playing around the Detroit, Michigan underground, setting up DIY shows in the area, and moving around the statenearly 20 times. Right when it starts to feel like home / It's time to go," she sings literally on its opening cut, Slow Motion, a twisty, dim-lit guitar pop song where she curls and stretches every word. There are worlds of emotion in the ways Chura pronounces phrases with twang and grit, alternatingly full of despair, playfulness, and abandon. Chura calls her music emotional collage, eschewing start-to-finish storylines in favor of writing intuitively about feelings, drawing from experiences and references related to a certain sentiment.
Through intricate guitar work and warm, textured production, Messes finds her trying to make sense of lifes ups and downs. Its about emotional mess, not physical mess, Chura says. The title track is about knowing that you are going to do something the wrong way, but youre doing it anyway because you want that experience. Ive had to do a lot of things the wrong way in order to figure out how to live my life.
winded (NY) https://winded.bandcamp.com/ Winded takes a charmingly melancholic indie rock mindset at home beyond the stylistic peership with contemporaries such as Japanese Breakfast, Palehound, and Jay Som but places this sound in a larger stylistic continuity from the charmingly dense guitar pop sounds of the '60s,
4AD's historic icons of post-punk dreaminess and gloom, and the deluge of alternative rock and pop sounds afterward such as shoegaze, grunge, and post-hardcore that came to constitute alternative rock on both side of the Atlantic. Confessional lyrics and instrumental hooks are amplified with everything else enough to obliterate the complacent familiarity one so often finds in dreamy, hazy rock. Even if heaven is just a place between the doldrums of mortality and the psychedelic oblivions most certainly beyond, winded now offer us a sonorous, enveloping heaven where we can feel as ethereal or as emotional as the day brings. This will perhaps be especially enjoyable for fans of peers and benchmarks such as Slint, Breeders, Alvvays, and Palm!
