The a cappella Yiddish folksong tradition was passed on orally for many centuries, and in the twentieth century both old and new Yiddish folksongs became more widely known through recordings. Hankus Netsky will examine classic Yiddish folksong arrangements and recordings by such artists as Sidor Belarsky, Isa Kremer, Seymour Rechzeit, Mordechai Hershman, Nechama Lifshitz, Theodore Bikel, and Jan Peerce, and he will discuss how each artist brought their own unique approach to the genre.
