The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc comprises Olav LuksengÄrd Mjelva (Norway), Anders Hall (Sweden) and Kevin Henderson (Shetland). Individually they are regarded as three of the finest young fiddle players in the international roots-music universe. Collectively, they are now finding themselves increasingly in demand across the world as a result of their unique collaboration. http://www.thenordicfiddlersbloc.com/
"The central experience of the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc concert is one of happy, vibrant music-making. This is music about dancing together and making community; it is music about how people share each others lives Playing just three instruments, Mjelva, Henderson and Hall make music that sounds like its come from a full string orchestra. Exploring all of each instruments possibilities and juxtaposing "regular" violins and violas abilities with those of specialized national fiddles such as the hardanger, Nordic Fiddlers Bloc creates a distinctive sound of clarity, modern edginess, and evocative other-worldliness. Their playing manages the magic balance of exceptionally tight control on the one hand and relaxed, dynamic fluidity on the other Rooted very far in the past, this music is, nonetheless, about optimism and the future. At the end of the concert, youre delighted at the prospect of whatever might come next. What could be better? Jean Ballard Terepka www.theatrescene.net, Symphony Space, New York, April 2015
Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is the brainchild of Anders Hall, who felt that combining the three distinctive fiddle styles of their respective countries and regions would create a special musical sound and experience. And with good reason. Norway, Sweden and Shetland (a Scottish archipelago) have three of the richest fiddle traditions in the world, with well-documented historical links going back hundreds of years. Nordic Fiddlers Bloc seeks to bring these historical links alive, and to present them in a new and dynamic fashion while remaining faithful to the roots of each rich tradition. Their clever use of harmony, rhythm, riffs, and bass lines creates an orchestral sound that leaves the listener enthralled, and also dumbfounded that all this sound comes from just three fiddles. This stellar collaboration allows each distinctive style to unfold into a composite that is intriguing, invigorating, and all its own.
This is why the Nordic Fiddlers Blocs debut album attracted such critical acclaim. Moreover, their 2016 release, Deliverance, has followed suit. The trio tours extensively, performing on stages large and small, and at many high-profile festivals throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe, Scandinavia, and North America. It is a privilege to be able to bring this spectacular trio to Gainesville.
