VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE by Christopher Durang
Master of comedy, Christopher Durang, in his 2013 Tony Award Winner for Best Play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, takes characters and themes from Chekhov and pours them into a blender and mixes them up. The utterly hilarious and occasionally touching result is set in present day Bucks County, PA, where Vanya and his stepsister Sonia have lived their entire lives in their family's farmhouse. While they stayed home to take care of their ailing parents, their sister Masha has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia to feel trapped and regretful. Their soothsayer/cleaning woman Cassandra keeps warning them about terrible things in the future. A surprise visit from Masha and her 20-something boy toy, Spike, throws the normally quiet household into utter upheaval as its residents and visitors get swept up in an intoxicating mixture of lust, rivalry, regret, and the sudden possibility of escape. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also on the scene is a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness somewhat worries the imperious Masha. Hugely entertaining and deliriously funny, the show's a ton of fun even if you can't tell your Seagull from your Cherry Orchard. In its own deliciously madcap way, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike offers some keen insights into the challenges and agonies of twenty-first-century life.
