Three Zithers
Join us on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. for the final concert in our Orange Coast Concerts 2008-2009 Season.
Featuring Scott Williams on Hammered Dulcimer, Reiko Obata on Japanese Koto, and Dara Bamoradi on Persian Qanun. Carrying on the tradition of Orange Coast Concerts' previous sell-out events "Three Guitars" and "Three Flutes," this year's "Three Zithers" promises to be the epitome of an eclectic and intimate event!
zither ; [zith-er] noun a musical instrument, consisting of a flat sounding box with numerous strings stretched over it, that is played on a horizontal surface.
Scott Williams, hammered dulcimer Born in Delaware and raised in Maryland, Scott Williams took up the hammered dulcimer in college after a spontaneous purchase of one at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. With Celtic, colonial, medieval, rock, and Renaissance influences, Scott has developed a repertoire of songs.
As a multi-instrumentalist, Scott plays and records the majority of what he calls his "backing tracks." These tracks are studio mixes of guitars, cello, bass, drums, mountain dulcimer, mandolins, and synthesizers to create the foundation of his music. He then performs live with the hammered dulcimer to combine the sounds for a presentation of what sounds like a full ensemble.
Reiko Obata, Japanese koto A Japanese American koto performer based in Southern California, Reiko Obata began studying koto in 1980 under masters in the U.S. and Japan including Mde. Masazumi Mizuno in San Diego, Mde. Kayoko Wakita in Los Angeles, and composer virtuoso Shinichi Yuize in Tokyo. Reiko has a master's degree in music from San Diego State University and a Japanese koto master's degree from the Seiha Conservatory of Japanese Music. Reiko has performed for radio, film, and live theatre.
