Join the San Jose Symphonic Choir with Cal Arte Ensemble for a performance featuring works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Hummel on Saturday, March 23, 2019.
The onset of the 19th century saw revolutions that defined a new government in France and a new country in America. Social change began that ended slavery, and industrial change revolutionized travel and the work place. Music moved away from the defined forms of classicism towards the romantic era. Two names that epitomize these musical transitions are Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Hummel. Beethoven's influential movement towards romanticism is well-documented. But who was Johann Hummel?
Although Hummel fell out of fashion after his death, he was highly regarded in his day and left an indelible mark as a classicist, particularly through pianistic techniques passed on to his students. Though primarily a pianist he wrote copiously for voice and for many instruments. He studied with Mozart, knew Clementi and Schubert, and worked closely with Haydn in the Court of Prince Esterhazy. He was a contemporary and sometimes friend of Beethoven, though their music differs significantly.
SJSC will pair two masses, one by each composer, allowing comparison of the styles and gifts of these two important classical contemporaries.
The performance takes place in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph, 80 South Market Street, San Jose, at 7:30 pm.
Refunds on ticket purchases available only within 12 hours of purchase from Brown Paper Tickets (but no later than at the end of ticket sales).
