Palmetto Voices
The Palmetto Voices Spiritual Ensemble are made up of alumni of Dr. Sonja SepĂșlveda from Salem College Choirs of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Brewton-Parker College Concert Choir of Mount Vernon, Georgia, Western Kentucky University Womens Choir of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Carolina Alive of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina and graduates of Sumter High and the Sumter High Concert Choir.
Formed in 2006, the choir strives to preserve the legacy of the Negro Spiritual and share the vision that this unique American choral art form is for everyone. The choir sang at the South Carolina Music Educators Conference in 2009 and combined with the Brewton-Parker Concert choir, sang in the summer of 2010 at Carnegie Hall. They were a chosen choir for the Southern Division of American Choral Directors Association in 2012, National American Choral Directors Association in Dallas, Texas 2013, and featured choir in Florence, Italy 2015. In 2017 singers from the choir joined Dr. Sepulveda for a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City when she conducted the New England Symphonic Ensemble and 200 other singers as they performed the Rutter Requiem and later gave a solo concert at St. John the Divine.
